Ecosystem services in Natura 2000 network sites.

Objective

Develop new environment governance paths aimed at safeguarding the agroforestry ecosystems and elaborating biophysical quantification and economic assessment of the ecosystem services in the sites of the Natura 2000 network. Improve the effectiveness of the management of the Natura 2000 sites providing the administrators with management and self-financing tools that constitute remuneration forms of the safeguarding activities. In particular, the developed/implemented self-financing tools are Payments for Ecosystem Services (PES).

Good Practice Description

To meet needs in terms of conservation of nature and habitats and for a lack of resources to ensure this conservation, the idea of the Making Good Natura project was born. The project assessed ecosystem services in Natura 2000 network sites throughout Italy and then forms of payment for ecosystem services were found that guaranteed habitat conservation.

An initial analysis of the site was first made through questionnaires submitted to the managing body; therefore, a qualitative assessment of ecosystem services and prioritization were carried out; subsequently a biophysical quantification and an economic evaluation of ecosystem services were made; after which the most suitable payment schemes were identified through the comparison of all the stakeholders; finally, the Payment of Ecosystem Services was implemented.

Territorial Context

21 pilot sites belonging to the Natura 2000 Network were involved and spread over the territory of seven Italian regions: Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia Romagna, Marche, Lombardy and Sicily. The climate and topographic conditions are heterogeneous although they are mainly affected by agricultural and forestry ecosystems.

Replicability conditions

Easily replicable in various contexts since tested in different types of Natura 2000 sites and on all ecosystem services.

Dissemination material

From the GoProFor database, in the final part of the sheet, it is possible to download material related to the project and in particular a publication entitled "Manual for the valuation of ecosystem services and implementation of PES schemes in agricultural and forest landscapes” in addition to other technical documentation and the Layman's Report.
