CARBOMARK - Development of policies for the creation of local voluntary carbon markets for mitigating climate change

LIFE07 ENV/IT/000388

Montecristo 2010

Object

Creation of a local market for the exchange of carbon shares produced by forest management, wood products, urban forestation and biochar.

Objective

Encouraging a local, voluntary market for the exchange of carbon shares to enforce European Union politics on fighting against climate change.

Good Practice Description

In Veneto and Friuli-Venezia-Giulia two local markets for the exchange of carbon shares produced by forest management, wood products, urban forestation and biochar, were created, developing online trading platforms. Allowed sellers (wood and forest product producers) and buyers of medium and small companies could compensate, through the platforms, their green-house-gasses emissions. The markets were managed by Kyoto Observatory (consultancy centers), that provided assistance to the parties, organized the markets and had the responsibility to create a credit record database and to monitor the exchanges.

Territorial Context

The good practice was conducted in Veneto and Friuli-Venezia-Giulia. The shares were calculated only considering activities and projects that took place in the two regional territories.

Replicability conditions

The project produced a document titled “CARBOMARK Manual” in which all the methodological and technical information are contained, including shares calculus, assigning procedures and the important role played by the Kyoto Observatories.

Dissemination material

In the final part of the good practice form, it is possible to download material related to the project, particularly a brochure, adocument titled “CARBOMARK Manual” and a “Layman’s Report”.
